PAGET, AUGUSTUS, SIR; BRITISH ENVOY TO DENMARK 1859-1866

Letter from Sir Augustus Paget, the British Envoy to Denmark, to General Charles Grey announcing that he is sending photographs of the Raphael Madonna in the Thorwaldsen Museum.

11 Dec 1859

Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (4 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/ADDA10/85/524

Paget writes that he will shortly send two photographs of the Madonna by Raphael in the Thorwaldsen Museum, presented by Mr Thiele, the Director of the Royal Collection of Engravings, for the Prince Consort. One shows the actual state of the picture, the other an 'improved' version intended to show its original state. He goes on to say that there is some doubt as to the authenticity of the 'Apothecary', described in the Christiansborg catalogue as 'of the school of' Raphael, so that the Prince may not want it photographed. But there is another original painting by Raphael of which Paget will send a photograph if required.

With the photographs of the Madonna he is sending one of an original drawing by Raphael, also given by Mr Thiele, from the Collection of Engravings; he adds that the collection includes 5 or 6 other drawings attributed to Raphael, and asks whether the Prince would like photographs of them. Finally he reports that Thiele plans to have all the best engravings photographed gradually, and to present them to public or private collections on an exchange basis, in case the Prince should be interested in acquiring them.
