GUSTAV WAAGEN (1794-1868)

Letter from Gustav Waagen to Dr. Ernst Becker regarding the Raphael drawing owned by Mr Harzen of Hamburg, which the latter is willing to allow to be photographed for the Prince Consort, and the question of how this can be arranged.

6 Mar 1857

Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (2 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/ADDA10/85/345

Waagen apologises for his late reply to Becker's letter; he thought it best to write to Mr Harzen first, to find out whether he still owned the drawing in question and if so, how he would be willing to allow it to be photographed. Harzen has replied confirming that he still has the drawing and that he is happy to be able to oblige the Prince Consort. He is prepared to send the drawing to London to be photographed, from which Waagen concludes that there is no suitable photographer in Hamburg. Waagen thinks Becker could ask him to send the drawing direct to him; or Waagen would be willing to have it sent to him and then to forward it to Becker.
