GIUSEPPE BARDI

Letter from Giuseppe Bardi to Dr. Ernst Becker from Paris, denying statements alleged in an article in The Spectator.

16 Aug 1859

Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (4 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/ADDA10/85/66-66a

Bardi writes that he has just read an article by Morris Moore in 'The Spectator' in which it is alleged that he said that the Prince Consort had been responsible for the Italian catalogue of Bardi's collection of photographs [of Raphael drawings], and thus for its mistakes.

Bardi denies having said this; the catalogue was written by Alinari, who alone is responsible for it. Bardi maintains that he merely told Morris Moore that it was thanks to the Prince Consort that he had been able to expand public knowledge of little-known collections, and that the Prince had rendered a great service to the arts.

The catalogue was published in Florence in October 1858 and Bardi presented it to the Prince in person at Windsor in January 1859.

A copy of Becker's reply is written on the letter, expressing the Prince Consort's appreciation of Bardi's comments.
