PALIARD, CHARLES-BENOÎT, COMMANDANT

Letter from Charles-Benoît Paliard to the Royal Librarian sending an article written by him on the telamons flanking Raphael's frescoes in the Stanza dell'Incendio in the Vatican, and offering photographs of them for the Prince Consort's Raphael Collectio

Paliard writes that the Raphael Collection begun by the Prince Consort and continued by the Queen is the first to have been made, in terms of scholarship, and he is flattered to have been mentioned in the catalogue. He himself continues to work on Raphael, and hopes to be able to contribute more new material for the catalogue, as he did last year when he provided [a photograph, or details of] a drawing by Ingres at Montauban.

He has recently had photographs taken of the three telamons (male versions of caryatids) included in Raphael's frescoes in the Stanza dell'Incendio in the Vatican, for the purposes of an article he has written about them, of which he encloses a copy (see VIC/ADDA10/85/564).

He offers Holmes copies of these four photographs for the Prince Consort's collection. In a postscript he adds that Braun has returned to Paris from Russia, where he photographed the important Raphaels in the Hermitage; at Paliard's request Braun also took 8 photographs of the 9 frescoes by the school of Raphael from the Villa Mills and the Villa Raphael, which formerly belonged to the Marquis Campana.

They are already represented in the collection at Windsor; but Paliard points out that The Nymphs Surprised by a Satyr does not seem to be in the Windsor catalogue, nor does the Capture of Helen, from the Villa Raphael.
