CRAVEN, AUGUSTUS

Letter from Augustus Craven to Sir Charles Phipps stating that the photographer he has found is about to start work at the Museum in Naples and explaining why it will be impossible to photograph other pictures by Raphael of which the Prince Consort desire

11 Mar 1861

Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (4 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/ADDA10/85/300

Craven states that Garibaldi's arrival at Naples, the departure of the [British] mission, together with Grillet's unsuccessful attempts to photograph the Raphael pictures in the Museum, have prevented the fulfilment of the Prince's wishes. But he has found a competent young Florentine photographer and with the Prince de Carignan's permission he will try to photograph these pictures at the Museum:

1. Cardinal Passerini
2. Cavaliere Tibaldeo
3. Raphael's mother
4. Leo X
5. Holy Family
- and two cartoons, one of the Holy Family, the other of Moses and the burning bush. Craven hopes to be able to send the plates soon.

Craven regrets, however, that it will be impossible to obtain reproductions of the pictures in private collections which the Prince wanted, as is plain from a document he encloses (possibly VIC/ADDA10/85/299). Furthermore, the Madonna della Gatta cannot be photographed as it is being repaired, while the painting on wood with lunette from the Convent at Perugia cannot be traced, although Craven thinks the King took it with him to Gaeta on 6 September and gave it to the Spanish Minister, Salvador Bermudez de Castro, the Marquis de Lema.

Craven hopes the Prince will not be disappointed with the seven plates which are to be delivered to him; he is sure that the photographer, Tomasi, will be successful.

See VIC/ADDA10/85/294 for the list of pictures which the Prince wanted photographed at Naples.
