Unsigned note written in Naples, explaining why pictures formerly belonging to Marchese Letizia, Don Ciccio di Luca and the Signori Langellotti cannot be photographed [for the Prince Consort].

The note states that the photographs requested of pictures belonging to Marchese Letizia, Don Ciccio di Luca and the Signori Langellotti cannot be taken. Firstly, the Letizia gallery has been sold. The famous portrait of the Fornarina, reduced [adapted?] by Raphael to a St Catherine, passed to Sir Richard Acton in return for an annuity; his widow then married Lord Granville. The portrait must be with Acton's heir, Lord Granville's stepson, who lives in London.
Secondly, the sketch representing the descent from the Cross has been disposed of, along with all the pictures, drawings and sketches in the collection of Don Ciccio di Luca, and the whereabouts of the many originals by Raphael and other old masters are unknown. Thirdly, the Langellotti gallery has been sold by public auction; many of the pictures were bought by Gaetano ?Pirro, who sold them on to unknown buyers.
This may be the document enclosed by Augustus Craven in his letter to Sir Charles Phipps of 11 March 1861 (see VIC/ADDA10/85/300).
