PILOTY & LOEHLE; ART PUBLISHERS TO THE KING OF BAVARIA

Letter from art publishers Piloty & Loehle to Dr. Ernst Becker in reply to his enquiry about two pictures by Raphael said to be in King Ludwig of Bavaria's collection, informing him that they are not in the collection.

10 Mar 1856

Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (4 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/ADDA10/85/338

In reply to Becker's letter of 28 February (not present), the publishers state that the two pictures by Raphael - the baptism of Christ and the Resurrection - are not in King Ludwig's collection, and they know nothing of them. They ask Becker to send details of the sources which cite the King as the owner of these pictures so that they can make further enquiries, although they know that the King displays all his private collection of Old Masters in the Royal Pinakothek, and that there are only a few modern paintings in the royal apartments. They also wish to inform Becker that they are about to send him the fourth issue of King Ludwig's Album for Prince Albert, together with 8 recently published [?plates - 'Blätter'] from the Pinakothek, for which the remittance can be sent through whatever German financial institution is convenient. At the same time they ask for Becker's help in obtaining payment from Queen Victoria's Librarian, Mr Glover, who seems to have overlooked their bill and two reminders, for material supplied in 1854. They will have to insist on payment within three months for all future transactions. They have hesitated to write to Mr Glover himself about this for fear of creating a misunderstanding through their lack of practice in English. Becker wrote a note of his reply at the foot of the letter: the pictures are mentioned in Volume II of Passavant, page 14, as belonging to the King of Bavaria; and Glover, whom he has reminded of the bill, has arranged for it to be paid.
