WILLIAM RUSSELL (1800-84)

Incomplete letter from William Russell to Sir Charles Phipps concerning the sale of M. Reiset's collection of drawings, including some attributed to Raphael.

4 Jan 1861

Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (2 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/ADDA10/85/248

Russell writes that he told the Prince Consort he had heard that M. Reiset's collection of drawings was to be sold. He has since heard that the Duc d'Aumale has bought them for £5,600; there are 360 drawings including, he believes, nine attributed to Raphael. He comments that the price was very high. The end of the letter is missing.
