Papers relating to Prince Albert’s personal life and enthusiasms

DR ERNST BECKER (1826-88)

Draft letter from Dr. Ernst Becker to W. Tinker, a photographer in Haarlem, asking if he would be willing to photograph the Raphael drawings in the Teyler Museum, and if so when and under what conditions he would be prepared to do the work.

21 Oct 1859

Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (4 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/ADDA10/85/496

Becker writes that he would like to know whether M. Tinker would be prepared to carry out a commission for the Prince Consort, namely to photograph about 15 drawings by Raphael in the Teyler Museum, the copies to be the same size as the originals. If so, how soon could he do this; what would be his conditions for sending the plates to England; what would he charge if he kept the plates and sent only prints to HRH? In the latter case, Becker informs him, the Directors of the Museum would have no objection to his publishing copies of the photographs, and even adding photographs of other Old Master drawings in the collection.
