DR ERNST BECKER (1826-88)

Copy letter from Dr. Ernst Becker to the British Envoy to Sweden responding to the latter's letter concerning the photographing of the Raphael drawings in the Swedish royal collection.

21 Jun 1859

Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (4 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/ADDA10/85/529

Becker writes in answer to Magenis's letter to General Grey of 30 May (see VIC/ADDA10/85/528), thanking him for the trouble he has taken regarding the Raphael drawings in Stockholm. He is grateful for the book by Pehr Tham which provides useful information. He asks Magenis to have a photograph taken of the painting, in the Royal Museum in Stockholm, of the Virgin with the two children and St Elizabeth, ascribed to Mignard.

The photographer Hansen's prices must be paid, although high, and he should photograph all the drawings including the landscapes and architectural sketches. The negatives (plates) must be sent too, as prints made abroad are not reliable and the Prince Consort does not wish to add any photographic prints to his collection which are not guaranteed to be permanent.
