DR ERNST BECKER (1826-88)

Copy letter from Dr.Ernst Becker to Sir Arthur Magenis accepting his offer of help from Naples and sending a list of works by Raphael there of which the Prince Consort wishes to have photographs.

28 Jun 1859

Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (8 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/ADDA10/85/531

Becker writes that he has done as Magenis suggested with respect to the Raphael drawings in Stockholm, and announces that the Prince Consort gladly accepts Magenis's offer of help in Naples, as it has not been possible, since diplomatic relations with that kingdom were broken off, to complete the negotiations begun some years ago for the photographing of Raphael pictures in Naples. Becker encloses a list of these pictures, and states that the best photographer at Naples was Monsieur Bernoud, a Frenchman, who may or may not still be there. The Prince wants the negatives sent, and is particularly keen to have the first picture on the list photographed as it completes an important part of the collection.

The list contains (with details of which collections in Naples they are in): 1. Altarpiece showing the Virgin enthroned with Saints Catherine, Rosalie, Peter and Paul. 2. The [lunette] belonging to No. 1, showing God the Father holding the globe, with angels. 3. Madonna della Gatta. 4. Portrait of Cardinal Passerini [?Passerino]. (No. 5 is omitted) 6. Portrait of a gentleman dressed in black. 7. Portrait of Jacopo Sanazzaro. 8. Portrait of Raphael's minstress as Saint Catherine.
Drawings: 1. The Cartoon for the Holy Family in the Museum. 2. Kneeling figure of Moses, part of cartoon for fresco of Moses in the Burning Bush. 3. Sketch for a Descent from the Cross.

See VIC/ADDA10/85/294 for Ruland's letter in 1860, asking for photographs of Raphael works in Naples, including these.
