CARL RULAND (1834-1907)
Copy letter from Charles Ruland to William Foster White seeking permission from the Governors of the Foundling Hospital to photograph the Raphael cartoon there.
29 Nov 1860Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (4 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/ADDA10/85/147
Ruland states that he is writing on the recommendation of Sir James Clark; he explains the nature of the Prince Consort's Raphael collection, and states that HRH recalls having seen at the National Gallery a cartoon of 'The Massacre of the Innocents' belonging to the Foundling Hospital, and would like to have it photographed for his collection. He asks whether the Governors would allow this, and adds that as the negative plate would belong to HRH, his photograph would be the only one, should the Governors not wish the cartoon to be made public.
