The battle of Constantine at the Milvian Bridge

after 1860

Carbon print | RCIN 852921

Two joined photographs showing a drawing now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.3872). The drawing, sometimes attributed to Raphael and sometimes to one of his workshop artists, is thought to have served as modello for the fresco of 'The Battle of Constantine at the Milvian Bridge', painted in the Sala di Costantino in the Vatican between 1520 and 1524. Several changes were eventually made in the fresco. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References. Not in Ruland (1876).
  • Acquired for the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1860-76)
