Vatican Frescoes

Study of a woman with two small children, and other sketches

c.1853-76

Albumen print | RCIN 852693

A photograph of a drawing by Raphael (c.1511-12) now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (inv. no.WA1846.198v). The main studies connect with the figure of the kneeling woman holding two children painted in the left foreground of Raphael's fresco of 'The Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple', executed in 1511-12 in the Stanza di Eliodoro in the Vatican. At lower left is a sequence of garlands, and at lower right is a sketch of figures often interpreted as a first thought for prophets in the Chigi Chapel in Santa Maria della Pace. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.

The main studies were engraved in facsimile by F.C. Lewis for Ottley's 'School of Italian Design', 1823. An impression can be found at RCIN 852694.
  • Acquired for the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
