FREDERICK CHRISTIAN LEWIS (1779-1856)

Study of a woman with two small children, and other sketches

1 April 1818

Lithograph | 47.8 x 33.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852694

A facsimile reproducing the main studies from a sheet by Raphael (c.1511-12) now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (inv. no.WA1846.198v). Lettered with description and production details. Published in W.Y. Ottley's 'Italian School of Design', London 1823.

The studies connect with the figure of the kneeling woman holding two children close to her painted in the left foreground of Raphael's fresco of 'The Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple', executed in 1511-12 in the Stanza di Eliodoro in the Vatican. A photograph of the drawing can be found at RCIN 852693.
