AFTER? RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

Study of a seated bishop and standing deacons

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 13.2 x 15.7 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852811

A photograph of the verso of a drawing now in the Kunstmuseum in Düsseldorf (inv. no.F.P. 11v). The drawing is generally thought to be a preparatory study (by Raphael or one of his pupils) for the fresco of 'The Coronation of Charlemagne', painted in the Stanza dell'Incendio in the Vatican in c.1516-17. The study connects with a seated bishop depicted in the left background of the fresco, and with two deacons taking part in the coronation ceremony.
