AFTER A WORK COPYING RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

Study of a group of draped figures in a variety of poses

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 19.8 x 30.9 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852434

A photograph of a drawing currently in the Devonshire Collection, Chatsworth House (inv. no.58a). The drawing is thought to be a copy of a compositional study by Raphael (now lost), preparatory for the lower left-hand group in the Disputa (The Disputation of the Holy Sacrament) painted in the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican between 1508 and 1511. Another copy of the Raphael original is now in the Louvre (inv. no.3884v).

A closely related study by Raphael (dating c.1508-09) is housed in the British Museum, London (1900,0824.108). Copies of the latter survive in the Szépmüvészeti Múzeum, Budapest (inv. no.F(1898)137) and in the Louvre (inv. no.3974).
