Sheet of studies for 'Philosophy'

published 1778

Etching | RCIN 852578

A facsimile of a drawing now in the Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe degli Uffizi, Florence (inv. no.514E), wrongly attributed on plate to Leonardo da Vinci. Numbered at upper right: 42. Published in 'Istoria pratica dell'incominciamento, e progressi della pittura', Florence 1778, plate 42. The drawing, which Ruland (1876) attributed to Raphael, is now generally thought to be a copy after a lost study by Raphael related to 'Philosophy', the bas-relief grisaille painted under the niched statue of Athena on the right side of 'The School of Athens'.
  • Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
