PHILIPP HOFF (ACTIVE C. 1860S)

God's Covenant with Noah

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 12.4 x 30.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853656

A photograph of a drawing in the Städel Museum, Frankfurt (inv. no.375), attributed to the workshop of Raphael, for the almost entirely destroyed fresco 'God's Covenant with Noah' painted by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the basamento of the third bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican. The photograph appears to have been mounted on top of another, smaller, reproduction of the fresco, but it is difficult to tell whether this is a print or a photograph.

According to Dacos (see Bibliographic References), the basamento paintings of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican were executed in grisaille and imitated bronze reliefs. Dacos attributes the drawing to Perino del Vaga.
