AFTER A WORK BY THE WORKSHOP OF RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

God separating Land from Sea

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 15.4 x 22.8 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853349

A photograph of a drawing catalogued by Ruland (1876) as being then in the possession of M. Clément in Paris. The drawing is similar in composition to the fresco of 'God separating Land from Sea' painted by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the vault of the first bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican.

The annotations on the drawing appear to bear a strong resemblance to those on the drawing reproduced in RCIN 853342, which Ruland stated was then (1876) in the collection of the Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar: this may suggest a shared earlier provenance for both drawings. A modello drawing for the fresco by Gianfrancesco Penni is in the collection of the Louvre (inv.no.3893).
