AFTER A WORK COPYING RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

A young warrior wearing a helmet standing in front of a flaming alter, surrounded by pieces of armour

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 20.8 x 14.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852573

A photograph of a drawing now in the Biblioteca Reale, Turin (inv. no.DC. 15749). The drawing corresponds with Agostino Veneziano's engraving of 'A Young Man near an Altar' (see RCIN 852572), although in reverse and with a few omissions in the foreground. The figure of the warrior in Agostino's engraving is derived from Raphael's figure of Alcibiades in the 'School of Athens' (or from a preliminary study for that figure). Passavant (1860) mentioned a drawing of this figure as in the collection of Isaac Walraven in Amsterdam in 1765.
