CONRAD MARTIN METZ (1749-1827)

The Supper at Emmaus

published 1798

Lavis with etching, printed in brown | 26.6 x 18.8 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853297

A facsimile described as reproducing (in reverse) a drawing formerly in the collections of R. Udney, Mrs Foster and Baron Triqueti. Lettered with attribution to Raphael and then location of the work. Published in C.M. Metz, 'Imitations of Ancient and Modern Drawings', London 1798.

A photograph of the original drawing can be found at RCIN 853296. Another drawing of this composition is now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (inv. no.WA1846.301). See RCIN 853295.

Although with many minor differences, the composition corresponds with the tapestry of this subject part of the so-called 'Scuola Nuova' set, a twelve-piece set depicting scenes from the Life of Christ (eleven of which survive today in the Vatican Museums). For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
