ADAM VON BARTSCH (1757-1821)

The stoning of St Stephen

c.1777-1800

Etching | 26.1 x 41.8 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853081

A facsimile of a drawing by Raphael now in the Albertina, Vienna (inv. no.211). Lettered with artists' names. Passavant (1860) dated the print 1787.

The Albertina drawing has occasionally been connected with the tapestry of 'The Stoning of St Stephen' designed by Raphael in c.1514-15. It is now thought to be an earlier sketch of the same subject. A photograph of the drawing can be found at RCIN 853080.
