The miraculous draught of fishes
published c.1829-1834Lithograph | 23.0 x 32.8 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853028
Variously attributed to Raphael, Giulio Romano and Francesco Penni, the Albertina drawing is generally thought to be a first design for the composition of 'The Miraculous Draught of Fishes', one from a set of ten tapestry cartoons commissioned from Raphael by Pope Leo X in c.1515. The tapestries, subsequently woven in the Brussels workshop of Pieter van Aelst, were intended to be hung in the Sistine Chapel. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
Between 1829 and 1834 the lithographic printers Mansfeld and Company, who were based in Vienna, published two volumes of lithographic copies after drawings then in the collection of Archduke Charles of Austria, Duke of Teschen; volume one contained drawings attributed to the Italian school, and volume two the German and Flemish school.
