The Death of Ananias
c.1515-20Engraving | RCIN 853123
A print after Raphael's design for the Sistine Chapel tapestry of 'The Death of Ananias' now in the Vatican Museums (inv. no.43870). First state. Lettered at lower right within image: RAPH. VRB / INVĒT. The engraving, which Bartsch suggested as being the result of a collaboration between Agostino Veneziano and Marcantonio Raimondi, is generally dated c.1516.
The original tapestry cartoon by Raphael is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London on loan from the Royal Collection (see RCIN 912947). No preparatory studies for the composition survive. It has been suggested that a lost preparatory model may have served as source for this engraving. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
