UGO DA CARPI (C. 1480-1532)

The Death of Ananias

dated 1518

Chiaroscuro woodcut, from four blocks in ochre | 23.4 x 37.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853125

A chiaroscuro woodcut after Raphael's design for the Sistine Chapel tapestry of 'The Death of Ananias' now hanging in the Vatican Museums (inv. no.43870). Second state. Lettered with artists' names on a step. The first state bears the date of execution (1518) and privilege obtained from Pope Leo X and the Venetian Senate. See RCIN 853124.

No preparatory studies for the composition survive. The original tapestry cartoon by Raphael is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London on loan from the Royal Collection (see RCIN 912947). It has been suggested that Ugo da Carpi's chiaroscuro woodcut may be based on an engraving of the same subject by Agostino Veneziano (see RICNs 853122, 853123). For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
