AFTER A WORK COPYING RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

The Adoration of the Shepherds

after 1853

Albumen print | 49.7 x 40.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853268

A photograph of a painting once in the Dresden Gallery. Annotated in pencil on the back. Not in Ruland (1876). According to Passavant (1860), the painting may be the work of a Netherlandish artist who inserted three dogs in the foreground, two of which he described as copied from Durer.

The composition is derived from the tapestry of ‘The Adoration of the Magi’, one from a twelve-piece set depicting scenes from the Life of Christ, traditionally known as the ‘Scuola Nuova’ (eleven of which survive today in the Vatican Museums). The setting has been greatly modified. See RCIN 853263.
