AFTER RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

St Paul rending his garments

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 22.1 x 10.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853176

A photograph of a drawing by Raphael (c.1514-15) now in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles (inv. no.84.GG.919; formerly Chatsworth, inv. no.730). The drawing corresponds very closely with the figure of St Paul at left of the tapestry cartoon of 'The Sacrifice at Lystra', designed by Raphael and his studio for one of the tapestries commissioned by Pope Leo X for the Sistine Chapel. Seven of the original cartoons survive (including that of 'The Sacrifice at Lystra'), all of which are now in the Victoria and Albert Museum on loan from the Royal Collection. The ten original tapestries were woven in the workshop of Pieter van Aelst and are currently housed in the Vatican Museums.
