GÉRARD AUDRAN (1640-1703)

St Paul and St Barnabas at Lystra

c.1660-1693

Etching | 52.5 x 69.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853171

A print after the cartoon executed by Raphael and his workshop for the tapestry of 'The Sacrifice at Lystra' (Acts of the Apostles, Chapter 14, 8-18), one from a set of ten tapestries commissioned by Pope Leo X for the Sistine Chapel. Lettered with production details within image, and text along the lower margin. According to Passavant (1860), this print is based on a drawing by Charles Jervas.

Audran reproduced in print another of Raphael's tapestry cartoons (The Death of Ananias). See RCIN 853119.

Seven of the original cartoons survive (including that of 'The Sacrifice at Lystra'), now in the Victoria and Albert Museum on loan from the Royal Collection. The ten original tapestries were woven in the workshop of Pieter van Aelst and are currently housed in the Vatican Museums.
