ATTRIBUTED TO LEONIDA CALDESI (1823-91)

Set of photographs of fragments from a cartoon tapestry illustrating 'Christ's Charge to Peter'

c.1861

Albumen prints | RCIN 853062

A set of photographs showing three cartoon fragments now in the Musée Condé, Chantilly (inv. Peinture 40 A, 40 B, 40 C). The fragments come from a full-size duplicate of Raphael's tapestry cartoon of Christ's Charge to Peter (see RCIN 859145) apparently dating from the early sixteenth century. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.

There is a reference to Caldesi photographing drawings that the Duc d'Aumale acquired from the sale of Frédéric Reiset's collection in a letter from the printsellers and publishers Colnaghi to Carl Ruland, Prince Albert's librarian, dated 23 July 1861 (VIC/ADDA10/85/178).
