Christ's charge to Peter

published 1 Mar 1838

Etching on a steel plate | 52.2 x 77.9 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 853041

A print after the cartoon executed by Raphael and his workshop in 1515-16 for the tapestry illustrating 'Christ's Charge to Peter', one from a set of ten tapestries commissioned by Pope Leo X for the Sistine Chapel. Lettered with title, production details (including publication date) and Bible quote (John 21:17). The tapestry cartoon reproduced in this print is one of the seven that have survived; they are all part of the Royal Collection, and since 1865 are on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The ten original tapestries woven in the Brussels workshop of Pieter van Aelst (c.1516-20) are currently housed in the Vatican Museums.
