AFTER RAPHAEL (1483-1520)

The head of Mary Magdalene

c.1853-1876

Albumen print | 19.0 x 13.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 854436

A photograph of a drawing by Raphael (c. 1506-1507) now in the Uffizi, Florence (inv. no. 1477E). Annotated on the verso.

This drawing has been interpreted as a study for the head of Mary Magdalene in the 'Borghese Entombment', the central panel of an altarpiece ('Baglioni Altarpiece') executed by Raphael for the church of San Francesco al Prato in Perugia and now in the Galleria Borghese, Rome (inv. no. 70). Joannides (see Bibliographic References) relates the head of the Magdalene to the figure depicted in a modello for the main group now in the Uffizi, Florence (inv. no. 538 E; a photograph of which can be found at RCIN 850243).
