The head of a woman and studies of drapery

c.1853-1876

Albumen print | RCIN 854446

A photograph of a drawing that Ruland (1876) catalogued as being then in the collection of the late Baron de Triqueti, Paris and now in the British Museum (inv. no. 1947,1011.19). This drawing depicts the head of a woman in profile and studies of drapery. Annotated on the verso.

This drawing is a study for the Oddi 'Coronation of the Virgin' executed by Raphael in 1503-04 and now in the Pinacoteca Vaticana, Vatican City (inv. no.334) and in particular for the woman holding the doves on the far right of the predella panel depicting 'The Presentation in the Temple' (c.1503). See RCIN 851349 for a photograph of the Oddi Altarpiece and RCIN 851381 for a print reproducing 'The Presentation in the Temple'.

Pouncey and Gere (see Bibliographic References) underlined the strong influence of Perugino on the young Raphael being particularly evident in the drapery studies. They also noted that this photograph records the appearance of the drawing before some later restoration to the forehead and nose in the nineteenth century.
  • Acquired for the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
