AFTER RAPHAEL (1483-1520)

Studies for the Virgin's drapery and a male head

c.1853-1876

Albumen print | 22.8 x 31.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 854447

A photograph of a drawing by Raphael (c.1507-08) currently in the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris (inv. no.310). Ruland (1876) catalogued the drawing as being then in the collection of M. His de la Salle, Paris. Annotated on the verso.

This drawing depicts a study for the drapery of the Virgin in the so-called ‘Madonna del Baldacchino’ (c.1507-08), now in the Galleria Palatina, Palazzo Pitti, Florence (inv. no.1912, no.165). Joannides (see Bibliographic References) interpreted the male head as a copy of a fifteenth century portrait, perhaps by Lorenzo di Credi.

This drawing features sketches of a Virgin and Child on the verso: see RCIN 851216 for a photograph of the verso.
