AFTER A WORK BY THE CIRCLE OF POLIDORO DA CARAVAGGIO (C.1499-C.1543)

Studies of nude men

c.1853-1876

Salted paper print | 21.4 x 29.9 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 854370

A photograph of a pen and ink drawing now in the British Museum (inv. no Pp, 2.80), where it is attributed to the circle of Polidoro da Caravaggio. Annotated on the verso.

This drawing depicts studies of men and it was originally believed to be by Raphael. Pouncey and Gere suggested that the draughtsman might have been a Florentine artist in the circle of Polidoro, also comparing other drawings by the same hand (see Bibliographic References). Pouncey and Gere catalogued another drawing in the British Museum (inv. no. Pp,2.81, see RCIN 854367 for a photograph of it) as being very similar in style to the one catalogued here.
