The carved stalls of the choir of St Peter in Perugia
published 1811Engraving | RCIN 854260
In the eighteenth century, the panels of the wooden choir stalls were copied in drawing by Giovanni Cappelli, Vincenzo Monotti and Vincenzo Cioffi, which were then reproduced in engravings with inscriptions by Raimondo Faucci (18 plates) and Agostino Costa (plates 5, 8). The suite of prints was originally published at Perugia by Constantino Constantini, apparently in two parts, plates 1-10 in 1789 and the remaining plates in 1791.
The wooden choir was executed by the carver Stefano da Bergamo – who took over from Bernardino Antonibi, who died of plague in 1526 – and completed in 1535. At the beginning of the eighteenth century the French Benedictine Bernard de Montfaucon, visiting the abbey of San Pietro on his journey through Italy (1698-1701), suggested that Stefano da Bergamo had used drawings by Raphael. Similarities with the decoration of the Logge – painted by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the Vatican – have been noted since.
