AFTER A WORK COPYING PIETRO PERUGINO (CITTÀ DELLA PIEVE C. 1450-FONTIGNANO 1523)

St Michael triumphing over Satan

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 33.7 x 21.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851530

A photograph of a painting listed by Ruland (1876) as being then in the collection of the Rev. Mr Sutton. The painting is a copy of a panel once part of the so-called Certosa Altarpiece, a polyptych by Perugino (c.1499-1500), the lower compartment of which is now in the National Gallery, London (inv. no.NG 288). Differently from the panel by Perugino (in which the figure of Satan is largely cut away), the photographed painting shows the full-length figure of Satan at the foot of St Michael. A photograph of the original panel by Perugino at RCIN 851523.c.
