AFTER RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

St John the Evangelist

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 19.1 x 8.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851593

A photograph of a drawing by Raphael (c.1500-01) now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.3870 r). The drawing copies a statue of St John the Evangelist by Donatello for the façade of Santa Maria del Fiore, Florence; the statue is currently housed in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, Florence. It has been suggested that the drawing may copy a lost study by Perugino after Donatello's statue (Joannides 1983).

This drawing features a study for a male head on the verso (see RCIN 854429 for a photograph of the verso).
