AFTER RAPHAEL (1483-1520)

Kneeling figure of a youth

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 25.5 x 18.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851586

A photograph of a drawing by Raphael (c.1502-03) now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Ruland (1876) interpreted the figure as St Stephen. It is now generally thought that the drawing may be a study for a female figure (Mary Magdalene?). A facsimile of the drawing, published in W.Y. Ottley's Italian School of Design, London 1823, at RCIN 851585.
