AFTER A WORK PREVIOUSLY ATTRIBUTED TO RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

A standing female saint

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 29.1 x 15.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851568

A photograph of a pricked cartoon by Raphael (c.1503-04) now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.783 D.R., Collection Edmond de Rothschild). The cartoon was used for the 'St Catherine of Alexandria', a small panel by Raphael formerly in the collections of Contini-Bonacossi (Florence), Spencer A. Samuels (New York) and Marcos (Philippines), and now in the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche, Urbino (inv.1990 D 73). Although used for a panel depicting 'St Catherine', the subject of the cartoon is still a matter of dispute because the female figure bears the attributes of both St Catherine of Alexandria and St Apolline. Ruland (1876) catalogued the cartoon as being then in the collection of B. Suermondt (1818-87; Lugt 415) and interpreted it as St Agatha holding a pair of pincers. A photograph of a similar drawing currently housed in the Royal Library in Turin at RCIN 851569.
