AFTER A WORK ATTRIBUTED TO MARIOTTO ALBERTINELLI (1474-1515)

A female saint martyr

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 26.3 x 13.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851569

A photograph of a red chalk drawing now in the Royal Library in Turin (inv. no.15756). The drawing, previously attributed to Raphael, is now ascribed to Mariotto Albertinelli (Bertini 1958). Although with a few differences, the drawing seems to correspond closely to a pricked cartoon by Raphael (c.1503-04) now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.783 D.R.; Collection Edmond de Rothschild), which was used for the 'St Catherine of Alexandria', a panel by the master currently in the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria, Urbino (inv.1990 D 73). A photograph of the cartoon in the Louvre at RCIN 851568. The photograph shows a full-length standing woman, holding a palm branch in her left hand, and a platter with two breasts in her right. The female figure has been identified as St Agatha, but may also be St Lucy holding her pulled-out eyes.
