AFTER GIOVANNI FRANCESCO PENNI (1496-C. 1536)

A seated male youth with his right arm raised up

25.3 x 20.3 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851513

A photograph of a drawing formerly in the collection of Lord Strabolgi, London, and now in the Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh (inv. no.D5363). The drawing - which is now attributed to G.F. Penni - is one of a number reproducing a figure study (probably by Raphael and now lost) preparatory for the 'St John the Baptist in the Desert', a painting by the workshop of Raphael after designs by the master (c.1517-18) now in the Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence (inv. no.1446). A drawing in the Uffizi, Florence (inv. no.545E) has been long thought to be the original study by Raphael (see RCIN 851510). See also RCIN 851512. This photograph was added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection in 1992.
