Portraits
The Violin Player
c.1822-1873Engraving | RCIN 852098
A print after the so-called 'Violin Player', a painting now generally attributed to Sebastiano del Piombo and recently recorded as belonging to Baron E. de Rothschild in Paris. State before all letters.
The painting was formerly in the Sciarra Collection in Rome and has been long regarded as a portrait by Raphael, an opinion also shared by Ruland (1876). Modern scholars are unanimous in rejecting this attribution, with the majority of them giving the painting to Sebastiano del Piombo. The identity of the sitter remains unknown.
Another impression of the same print (final state) is included in the "Portraits of Raphael" section of the Raphael Collection; see RCIN 850111 for it.
