JOHANN ANTON ALBAN RAMBOUX (1790-1866)

The room in which Raphael's body was laid out

c.1820-1866

Lithograph with single toneplate | 38.2 x 29.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850160

A lithograph depicting an interior view of the vaulted room in a palazzo in the Borgo, Rome, in which Raphael's body was laid out on his death. This was probably Palazzo Caprini. Lettered with the title and numbered: "99". Plate no.99 from a-yet-unidentified set. Annotated on the verso.

Palazzo Caprini was a building, now destroyed, erected on Bramante's project between 1501 and 1510 for the apostolic protonotary Adriano Caprini. This building was also known as "Palazzo di Raffaello", as in 1517 it was acquired by Raphael, who spent the rest of his life there. The Palazzo was in the Borgo rione (district) in Rome and since the end of the 16th century it became the main core of Palazzo dei Convertendi, which was demolished in 1938 for the opening of Via della Conciliazione. See RCIN 854133 for a print representing Palazzo Caprini.
