Portraits

ITALIAN SCHOOL, 16TH CENTURY

The heads of Leonardo, Raphael and Titian

c.1520-1600

3.5 x 8.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850026

A reversed impression of a niello print representing the heads of Titian, Raphael and Leonardo. This print is lettered with the names of the artists under the portraits.

The head of Raphael seems inspired by a painting by Raphael (c.1505) now in the Uffizi, Florence (inv. no. 1890). This painting has been identified as a self-portrait of Raphael, but there is much debate about its authorship. This is partially due to its state of preservation (see Bibliographic References for further discussion).
