PAOLO FIDANZA (B. 1731)

Portrait of Baldassare Castiglione

published 1785

Etching | 32.9 x 24.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852068

An etching after a portrait of Baldassare Castiglione when in the collection of Monsignor Luigi Valenti Gonzaga, Archibishop of Cesarea (1725-1808). When catalogued by Ruland (1876), the painting was in the Palazzo Torlonia in Rome. The painting is clearly derived from Raphael's portrait of Baldassare, which is currently housed in Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. 611). Published in ' Recueil de têtes choisies de personnages illustres dans les lettres et dans les armes éxactement dessinées et gravées de la grandeur des originaux par Paul Fidanza', Rome 1785, Tom II, 23. The legend below image identifies the sitter as Baldassare Castiglione and attributes the painting to Raphael
