AFTER A WORK BY THE WORKSHOP OF RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

Portrait of a Young Woman

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 26.2 x 19.7 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852103

A photograph of the 'Portrait of a Young Woman', a painting currently in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Strasbourg (inv. no.175), the attribution of which is matter of dispute, as well as the identity of the sitter. The painting is generally given to Raphael's workshop, with some scholars attributing it to Penni although it is more usually associated with Giulio Romano. Recent literature suggests a direct participation by Raphael. The identity of the young woman remains unclear. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
