A print after a portrait of a young man when in the collection of Lucien Bonaparte in Rome. The lettering below image identifies the sitter as Giovan Francesco Penni, named Il Fattore, and attributes the portrait to Raphael. Published in Choix de gravures à l'eau-forte d'après les peintures et les marbres de la galerie de Lucien Bonaparte, London 1812, plate 76.
According to Passavant (1860), the painting entered the collection of King William II of the Netherlands (1792-1849), and was later sold at his posthumous sale in 1850; Ruland (1876) catalogued it as being then in the hands of the Duchess of Saxe-Weimar.
