Portrait of a Young Man

c.1623-1648

Engraving | RCIN 852038

A print after a painting once in the collection of Prince L. Czartoryski in Paris, later in the Czartoryski Museum in Cracow (inv. V-239) and untraced since World War II. The painting is generally regarded as a self-portrait by Raphael, but its authorship as well as the identity of the sitter are ongoing matters of dispute. The young man has also been identified as Federico Gonzaga or Francesco Maria della Rovere. Suggestions for the dating of the painting range from 1512 to 1519.

This is the earliest print reproducing the painting; the legend below image records that the painting was believed to be Raphael's self-portrait. According to Ruland (1876), the picture was in the possession of Van Dyck when this print was made. This is second state of four. See also RCIN 850029 for the same print.
  • Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
