WENCESLAUS HOLLAR (1607-77)

Portrait of a Man

dated 1650

Etching | 26.2 x 20.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852110

An etching after a painting when in the Van Veerle Collection. The legend below image identifies the sitter as Arcolano Ermafodrito and ascribes the painting to Correggio. Dated and lettered with production details. Not listed in Ruland (1876). The portrait is currently part of the Alba Collection, housed in the Palacio de Liria in Madrid. Rylands (1992) attributes the painting to Palma il Vecchio (1527-8) and suggests the sitter may be Girolamo Capra. For further discussion see Bibliographic References.
